The Importance of Workplace Wellness

How does your company define success?

Profit? Rank? Customer satisfaction? Regardless of your chosen metrics, a company’s success is only as good as the employees it retains.

Over the last couple years, employees have been leaving their jobs in record numbers. An average of 3.98 million workers quit their jobs each month in 2021, and The Great Resignation does not appear to be slowing down.i  This mass exodus includes the entire range of workers, from entry-level trainees to irreplaceable experts. Accordingly, companies are losing valuable knowledge and skills, decreasing productivity, and lowering employee morale. Furthermore, the cost to recruit and replace employees ranges from about 50% of the annual salary for an entry-level worker to 200% of the annual salary for a highly trained employee.ii

So far, some companies have seemed immune to this pandemic-induced power shift. Why?

They didn’t experience a power shift because their companies didn’t need one. They had already built a thriving, employee-centric workplace. Consequently, for everyone else, now is the time to seize the opportunity to change our workplace culture for good.

Now is the time to change our workplace culture for good.

Workplace Wellness

Some variation of the term “workplace wellness” has emerged throughout U.S. companies over the last several years. For most employees, that term has translated into a collection of incentive programs and self-help apps aimed at providing the resources and the motivation for employees to achieve wellness. In the meantime, as the pandemic has highlighted the importance of mental health, these programs have started incorporating an added emphasis on “supporting mental health.” Despite their good intentions, most of the workplace wellness programs have missed the mark.

True Workplace Wellness is predicated on these concepts:

  • The wellbeing of an organization and the wellbeing of its workers are inextricably linked.
  • The key to both requires an understanding of this reciprocal relationship through a mental health lens.

Undoubtedly, if your company’s success is only as good as the employees it retains, then it is essential to retain quality employees who are working to their full potential. By effectively addressing the interrelated workplace wellness factors, companies can achieve both retention and productivity while simultaneously building a thriving company comprised of thriving employees.
